Velbus is a wired smart building system that allows different electrical features in your home or building to work together.
It can be used to control things such as lighting, heating, blinds and other electrical equipment, giving you more flexibility over how your electrical installation works.
Unlike many smart home products that are added afterwards, Velbus can be designed as part of the electrical installation itself.
Velbus can be used for anything from simple lighting control to a much more integrated smart building.
For example, you could:
Control several lights from one button
Create different lighting scenes
Turn multiple lights off when leaving the house
Control heating in different areas
Operate electric blinds or shutters
Automatically control things using timers and sensors
Have different parts of your home or building work together
The system can be designed around what you actually want rather than giving every property exactly the same setup.
One of the biggest advantages of Velbus is that it is a wired system.
Many consumer smart home products rely heavily on Wi-Fi, cloud services or lots of separate apps. Velbus instead uses dedicated wiring so its devices can communicate with each other as part of the building.
It can still be integrated with other technology where required, but the building control system itself does not have to revolve around controlling everything from an app.
A smart building should still be easy to use normally — you shouldn't need to find your phone just to turn the lights on!
Not every property needs a smart building system, and I offer both traditional electrical wiring and Velbus-based installations.
For some projects, traditional wiring may be the simplest and most appropriate option.
For others, Velbus can provide additional flexibility, automation and control.
The important part is choosing the right approach for the property and what you want from it, rather than adding technology simply for the sake of it.
The way we use our homes and buildings is changing.
Lighting, heating, energy management and other electrical systems are becoming increasingly connected and automated. Systems such as Velbus provide a way of bringing these different functions together.
Because the way the system operates can be configured, it can also provide greater flexibility if your requirements change in the future.
For me, Velbus brings together traditional electrical installation and modern smart building technology.
I have developed my experience with Velbus through my involvement with Stuart at MDAR, alongside my wider electrical training.
I am currently becoming involved in designing Velbus systems through Stuart, looking at what a client wants their building to do and how Velbus can be used to achieve it.
I am continuing to develop my experience with the design, installation and commissioning of Velbus systems as part of my wider development in electrical installation and digital building control.
If you're considering Velbus for your home or project but aren't sure whether it's right for you, feel free to get in touch.
I can discuss what you're looking for and whether Velbus or a traditional electrical installation may be more appropriate for your project.
